laser tattoo removal frequently asked questions
How does laser tattoo removal work?
Laser tattoo removal uses high-intensity light beams to break down the ink particles in your skin. The body then gradually removes these fragments through the lymphatic system. It is advised to drink as much water as possible post treatment to flush out the ink particles.
Multiple sessions are usually required to fade or fully remove a tattoo, depending on the ink type, color, depth, and age of the tattoo.
Is laser tattoo removal safe?
Yes, laser tattoo removal is generally safe when performed by a qualified and experienced professional using medical-grade equipment.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required varies from person to person. Several factors influence this, including the tattoo’s size, colour, location, age, depth, your skin type, and how your body responds to the laser.
After each session, your body continues to flush out broken-down ink particles over the following weeks, resulting in gradual fading. It’s essential to allow a full 6–8 week healing period between treatments to ensure proper skin recovery and the best possible results.
As a general guide:
Permanent makeup removal typically requires 1–3 sessions.
Body art tattoos usually require 6–12 sessions, depending on complexity.
Will my tattoo be completely removed?
Some tattoos can be fully removed, while others may fade significantly.
Factors like ink type, colour, depth, and skin type affect results. Dark inks like black respond best, while colours like green, blue, and yellow can be more resistant.
Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The treatment is very quick, and breaks can be taken at any time for your comfort.
Ice will be applied before, during, and after the session to help with pain relief. If you’d prefer additional comfort, you’re welcome to source and apply a topical numbing cream before your appointment. Just be sure to carry out a patch test beforehand to check for any skin sensitivity or allergic reaction.
Who may not be suitable?
You may not be suitable if:
You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You have active skin infections, open wounds, or certain medical conditions.
You have recently tanned or have very dark skin (some lasers may not be safe or effective).
You are on medications that cause photosensitivity (consult your provider).
You have a history of keloid scarring (extra caution is needed).
Is there any downtime after each session?
There is minimal downtime. Most people can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. However, the treated area may feel like a mild sunburn and can be red, swollen, and in some cases may blister; however, we try to avoid this as best as possible.
It’s important to follow aftercare instructions to avoid complications.
